Summer is all about sunshine, vacations, pool days, and spending more time outdoors. But while the season brings plenty of fun, it can also be one of the most challenging times of year for your skin.
Increased sun exposure, heat, sweat, and environmental stressors can contribute to dehydration, clogged pores, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and premature aging. The good news is that a few simple adjustments to your skincare routine can help keep your skin protected, balanced, and glowing all summer long.
As a California Licensed Esthetician at Gemini Health & Wellness in Roseville, CA, here are my top five summer skincare tips to help you maintain healthy, radiant skin this season.
1. Never Skip Your SPF
If you only follow one skincare tip this summer, make it this one: wear sunscreen every single day.
Daily sunscreen use helps protect your skin from UV damage, premature aging, sunspots, discoloration, and skin cancer. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still reach the skin and contribute to long-term damage.
It’s also important to know that SPF in your foundation or moisturizer usually is not enough on its own. Most people do not apply enough makeup or moisturizer to receive the full SPF protection listed on the label. For best protection, use a separate broad-spectrum sunscreen under your makeup.
Esthetician Tip: Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and apply it every morning as the last step in your skincare routine. Reapply every two hours when spending time outdoors. A brush-on powder SPF is a great option for reapplication throughout the day, especially if you wear makeup or want to reduce midday shine.
2. Hydrate From the Inside Out
Summer heat can leave your skin feeling dry, tight, and dehydrated — even if you naturally have oily or combination skin.
Staying hydrated supports your skin barrier and helps maintain a healthy, refreshed complexion. In addition to drinking enough water, look for skincare ingredients that help attract and hold moisture, such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe vera.
Esthetician Tip: If your skin feels oily and dehydrated at the same time, avoid harsh or stripping products. Instead, focus on lightweight hydration and barrier support to help bring your skin back into balance.

3. Lighten Up Your Skincare Routine
Heavy creams and multiple layers of product may feel great during colder months, but summer often calls for a lighter approach.
Switching to lightweight moisturizers and non-comedogenic products can help prevent congestion, clogged pores, and breakouts while still keeping your skin hydrated and comfortable.
Esthetician Tip: Look for gel-based, lotion-based, or glycerin-rich moisturizers that hydrate without feeling heavy on the skin.
4. Add Antioxidants to Your Morning Routine
Vitamin C is one of my favorite summer skincare ingredients.
Antioxidants help defend the skin against environmental stressors and free radical damage while supporting a brighter, more even-looking complexion. When used in the morning under sunscreen, Vitamin C can add an extra layer of daily skin protection and glow.
Esthetician Tip: Add a Vitamin C serum to your morning routine before applying sunscreen. I recommend NOON Aesthetics Vit C Serum 11S. It contains 11% stable Vitamin C derivatives with micro-algae and is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Unlike some formulas that rely heavily on pure L-ascorbic acid, which can be very effective but irritating for some, this option offers antioxidant support with a gentler approach.

5. Schedule Professional Skin Treatments
At-home skincare is essential, but professional treatments can help address concerns that products alone may not fully correct.
Regular facials, gentle exfoliation, and customized skincare plans can help maintain healthy skin while targeting concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation, dehydration, dullness, texture, and signs of aging.
Esthetician Tip: Summer is a great time to focus on hydration, skin barrier support, and gentle maintenance treatments. One of my favorite in-office treatments for summer is a HydraFacial. It provides deep cleansing, exfoliation, and hydration to help your skin look refreshed, healthy, and glowing.
